ABOUT OLIVER
The Oliver Arts & Open Press exists because, in the view of its founders, publishing in the United States has lost its conscience, courage, intellect, and perhaps its mind. The publishing "industry" very likely didn't bid farewell to such attributes in the same order as they're listed here, but the fact is that these four virtues have been lost in nearly equal degrees of completeness. And that loss—in all American institutions but far from least in publishing—has resulted in and continues to result in grave cultural, social, and intellectual diminishment and degradation.
In a resisting spirit, Oliver aims to do good over harm by publishing the best and most meaningful work it can—usually work rejected or ignored by "mainstream" publishing, an entity that Oliver sees as being made up of the huge conglomerates, of the academic presses, and frequently also of the small presses, which much too often merely imitate their bigger brothers.
Unlike those, Oliver refuses to be limited by prefabricated or fossilized notions of "accessibility," "propriety," or convention in matters of genre, subject, attitude, or agenda.
As for material that Oliver will accept for publication, the editors look for and will seek to publish only work they consider to be of distinguished excellence, merit, interest, truth, independence, and authenticity. Those will be the sole criteria for selection.
